Why Should I Visit a Periodontist for a Dental Implant?

Periodontists are the foremost recognized authority on detecting & diagnosing periodontal diseases (a more advanced form of gum disease), and our team is always ready to assist in improving your dental health with our experience. Because gum disease progresses silently, too many people don’t notice when it’s growing worse or put off seeking treatment until the damage may be irreversible. Some also struggle with keeping their disease under control on their own. In addition to gum-related problems, our periodontists also specialize in detecting certain types of oral cancers.

When applying dental implants, our periodontists will take extra care and attention to detail in making the implant feel as much like your natural teeth as possible. It will fit inside your mouth without abnormalities, and any corrections that may be required will be made. Depending on your condition, the implant will be tailored toward your specific dental needs.

In any case, with help from Dr. Mugford or Dr. Sfondouris and a dedication to dental health, you don’t need to accept tooth loss as just a part of getting older and can maintain that smile for a lifetime.

What Treatments Can I Get From a Periodontist?

•  Gum disease treatment
•  Gum recession treatment
•  Dental implants
•  Gum grafting
•  Bone grafting
•  Periodontal surgeries, which can improve your gum-line’s appearance and your smile

How Do I Get Tested for Periodontal Diseases?

When you schedule a periodontal examination at our office, your gums will be probed for any signs of spaces below the gum-line commonly called “pockets”. Dr. Mugford or Dr. Sfondouris will evaluate the current color, looseness, and firmness of your teeth. Next, the overall symmetry and structural integrity of your bite will be determined. To get a precise look at the health of your supporting bone structure, X-rays may also be used.

Another option is a procedure known as periodontal probing, which is a well-established standard in periodontal disease examination and practice. To do this, a small measuring instrument is placed between the teeth and gums to search for pockets. This helps get an accurate look at their depth. A treatment called pocket reduction can help alleviate and get rid of these pockets.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

The ideal candidate for a dental implant will already be in good oral and physical health (healthy gums, tissues free of periodontal diseases, good jawbone structure to support the implant). Because dental implants are intimately connected with your mouth’s gum tissue and underlying bone, a poor state of dental health is not acceptable for undergoing the procedure to have one applied.

Are you or a loved one suffering from gum disease? Is standard brushing & flossing not showing any signs of helping the condition improve? Do you wish to speak to one of our periodontists about seeing if you qualify for a dental implant? If you need help scheduling a visit to The Mugford Center and wish to discuss possible treatment options, don’t forget to call us at (410) 260-0790.
