What Goes Into Aggressive Periodontal Treatment?

Posted on 5/29/2020 by David Mugford
What Goes Into Aggressive Periodontal Treatment? From its causes to its treatments, periodontal disease is fairly well understood. Generally caused by poor oral hygiene, it can range in severity of symptoms from early-stage (gingivitis) to a more advanced progression of the disease (periodontitis). However, there is a subset of periodontal disease known as “aggressive periodontitis” that is extremely rare and occurs in absence of other clinical symptoms of periodontal disease. It poses unique challenges toward treatment that stand apart from conventional gum disease treatments.

Understanding Aggressive Periodontal Disease

Aggressive periodontal disease manifests very differently from typical periodontal disease, from its target demographic to its progression. Typically found in younger patients (under the age of 30), it leads to a more rapid loss of teeth and requires swift intervention.
Signs of aggressive periodontitis include:

•  Very little plaque and tartar buildup
•  Little to no inflammation of the gums
•  Teeth that drift out of alignment
•  Deep gum pockets
•  Rapid loss of teeth

Quick diagnosis and treatment are critical to help prevent loss of bone and teeth. Treatment ranges depending on the severity and progression of the disease and include:

•  Antibiotics to halt the infection
•  Scaling and planing of the affected teeth
•  Extraction of severely damaged teeth
•  Bite adjustment treatment and grinding of drifted teeth
•  Dental implants, bridges, or other prosthetics for missing teeth
•  Gum flap surgery to restore lost tissue
•  Laser treatment on affected sites

It's important that our patients are advised as to how to better take care of their teeth at home, and we regard prophylactic treatment to be essential in preventing advanced progression of aggressive periodontitis.

While there is a huge genetic component at play in aggressive periodontitis, taking good care of your teeth and regular dental exams can aid in catching this disease early and providing a better outcome for treatment. If you notice any signs of gum disease in your mouth, do not hesitate to reach out to us. The sooner the disease is caught, the better the outcome will be for your teeth and gums. Please call us today to schedule your comprehensive dental exam and cleaning."
