What Are the Symptoms of Trench Mouth?

Posted on 3/20/2020 by David Mugford
What Are the Symptoms of Trench Mouth? No one wants to find out they have trench mouth. Just the name alone is enough to make people groan in agony. The problem is that although many people may have heard of the term, trench mouth, that does not mean they know what it is and what the symptoms are. Understanding what it is makes it easier to know what to look for and what to do about it.

What is It?

Trench mouth is a serious infection of the gums. It is often a result of poor oral hygiene habits. Trench mouth is an aggressive form of gum disease. Other names for trench mouth include:
•  Vincent stomatitis
•  Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis
•  Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis
It occurs most often in teenagers and young adults. It is more common in underdeveloped countries.

The Symptoms

Anyone suffering from trench mouth will typically suffer from several different symptoms. Common symptoms include:
•  Bad breath
•  Bleeding when brushing
•  Ulcers in the mouth
•  Fever
•  A grayish film on the gums
•  Swollen, red or bleeding gums
•  Pain
Some of the causes of trench mouth include poor oral hygiene, poor nutrition, smoking and tobacco use, stress, infections in the mouth and diabetes. Combining the causes with the symptoms can help a person recognize the problem. Another way to find out if you suffer from trench mouth is by visiting our office. Unfortunately, since the most common causes of trench mouth are not taking proper care of the teeth and gums, this is not the way that most people catch it early. If left untreated, trench mount can lead to serious health issues. It is an aggressive infection that can spread to other parts of the body. It can affect the cardiac system and the circulatory system. Do not ignore the signs of a problem such as trench mouth. Take the time to contact our office to schedule an appointment to help you maintain the best oral health possible.
