The Mugford Center would like to provide an update to all of our valued patients with concerns regarding the COVID-19 virus.

Based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) that citizens self-isolate during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the state of Maryland recommendations and restrictions, the Mugford Center will be limiting hours of operation and treatment available.

We are dedicated to the well being of all our patients and will be available for emergency care for pain swelling and infection as well as for urgent care which requires timely treatment.

As health care professionals, we all have a role to play in “flattening the curve” by following sound, scientific public health advice to help limit infections and slow the spread of the virus.

Bearing this in mind, we are carefully screening all scheduled and necessary treatment. and only seeing patients for emergency or urgent care. We take seriously the need to be available for our patients to avoid unnecessary illness or injury as well as preventing burdening our hospitals and emergency rooms.

We will reschedule all canceled appointments in a timely manner upon returning to the office and appreciate your understanding under the current circumstances.

We will continue to closely monitor the latest information and recommendations to promote a safe and healthy environment for our patients and staff. We plan to be available to provide safe and optimal care on this limited basis.

Our infection control procedures fully cover the COVID-19 virus, as they do all infectious diseases. We are taking extra precautions in screening our employees and patients, along with sterilizing the common areas of our office often.

We look forward to seeing you at your scheduled appointments. Please call the office if you have any questions or concerns, and we will be happy to address them.

Protecting you and your smile,
The Mugford Center

Do You Need to Worry About Gum Disease if You Have no Teeth?

Posted on 11/10/2019 by David Mugford
Do You Need to Worry About Gum Disease if You Have no Teeth? In short, if you have lost all your teeth you are still susceptible to gum disease and maybe more so.

If you have experienced losing teeth as an adult, it is possible you have already been affected by the gum disease known as periodontitis. Periodontitis occurs when a person develops gingivitis and it goes unchecked for a long period of time.

Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease can be spotted from the early stages, and there are some warning signs which can indicate that you are at risk. Red and swollen gums are a good indication of gums which are at risk of gum disease. If your gums become swollen and red throughout the day, it may be an early sign of gum disease. Another warning sign that your gums might be in detriment is bleeding and discomfort after brushing, flossing, or eating.

Whenever there is discomfort or bleeding from doing these daily activities on a consistent basis, it is crucial to address the issue immediately. An indication of advanced gum disease is pus or sores in your gums. If you are suffering from pus or sores, it is important to call us immediately and schedule an appointment because you may be at serious risk.

Preventative Care

Though you may have no teeth, it is still necessary to keep your mouth clean. We always recommend brushing the gums with a soft bristled toothbrush and a small amount fluoride toothpaste. It is also beneficial to use a mouthwash after brushing to make sure your mouth is as clean as possible. If you have dentures, it is important to rinse them after every meal to stop food build up.

We also recommend thoroughly cleaning your dentures with a toothbrush and toothpaste at least once a day as they can breed bacteria from being used. It may also be necessary to soak dentures overnight in a mild cleaning solution overnight.

While at home care of your mouth and gums is a great step in preventing gum disease, it is still important to visit our office once every six months for more thorough cleanings. By coming in once every six months, we will be able to assess any issues you are having or look for early signs. Please give us a call and schedule an appointment so that we may further discuss your dental hygiene needs.
