Is Crown Lengthening Good for Your Oral Health?

Posted on 10/20/2018 by David Mugford
Is Crown Lengthening Good for Your Oral Health?Crown lengthening is performed on a dental crown where excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth.

This procedure can be done to one tooth, several teeth or your entire gum line. If your teeth appear as if they are covered by too much gum tissue, you may want to have this corrected.

How is Dental Crown Lengthening Done?

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure where the excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of your natural teeth. If your gum line is uneven, this surgery can also help sculpt it to improve the shape and the look of your smile.

Is Crown Lengthening Safe?

Crown lengthening needs to be performed under local anesthesia. You will get stitches and your gums will be washed with sterile salt water. Even though this is a safe procedure, it does involve some risks, however, it can also help you take care of your teeth because it decreases the risk of tooth decay and can improve your dental health as well.

How Much Does Crown Lengthening Cost?

This procedure can be quite expensive. Crown lengthening cost between $1,000 and $4,000. If you have a medical condition that requires you to have crown lengthening, your insurance will probably cover some of the cost, however, if this is purely cosmetic, you will have to pay for the full amount.

Recovering from Crown Lengthening Surgery

When the surgery is over you will receive a prescription medication to help you with the pain and reduce swelling. You can also use ice packs and an over-the-counter medication as instructed.

Follow the instructions you will receive after the surgery and brush your teeth very carefully, immediately after surgery. It takes a few months to come heal completely from crown lengthening surgery. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions regarding this procedure.
