You may have experienced dry mouth from time to time, especially if you have been talking too long without drinking even a sip of water or when you are carrying out a strenuous physical activity without pausing but persistent and extreme dry mouth, or a condition called xerostomia, should be a cause for concern.

If you're suffering from xerostomia, you are not producing enough saliva, which is extremely needed to help neutralize the acid and to help control the level of bacteria in your mouth. This means that if you have an extremely dry mouth you are at risk of various oral health problems such as tooth decay and gingivitis.

Prevent Dry Mouth to Avoid Gum Disease

Considering the impact of dry mouth on the health of your gums, it is critical that you prevent this condition from happening so that you wouldn't suffer gum diseases. You can call us anytime if you want to know more about gum diseases and oral health, in general.

There are quite a few doable solutions that you can carry out so that you wouldn't experience dry mouth. For one, you should always drink or take a sip of water all throughout the day, particularly if the weather is hot or you are sweating a lot. Secondly, you should limit your caffeine and alcohol intake or get rid of your smoking habit as they all cause dehydration.

If it would be inconvenient for you to take a sip of water, you can chew sugarless gum since this will stimulate saliva flow and keep your mouth from drying. Moreover, if you have a habit of breathing through your mouth, you should learn how to breathe through your nose.

We can also help you to find oral care products such as artificial saliva spray and toothpaste to help your dry mouths as well as give you pointers and treatment that will address your problem. Visit us today for a consultation.
