How Painful is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and Root Planing The Mugford Center MD 21114
A lot of people worry that scaling and root planing is going to be painful. To some degree, it may even stop people from coming in to see us when they know they are showing signs of gum disease.

Instead of allowing your mouth to get worse and avoiding coming in, find out more about the procedure. The more you know, the less likely you are to have a problem with coming in to begin gum disease treatment.

How Scaling and Root Planing Works

When we do scaling and root planing, we have a few different tools we can use. We have manual scalers that we can use to help rid your teeth of both plaque buildup and tartar that has accumulated on your teeth.

Plus, there are also ultra-sonic scalers that can help remove the buildup from your teeth. Depending on which method we use, it can either reduce or increase your potential discomfort.

However, one thing to know is that we nearly always use anesthetics before starting this process. Most of our patients tell us that they felt minimal, if any, discomfort during the procedure, and were little more than sore for a little while afterwards. Their mouth was tender for the first day or so, but then they were able to go back to normal routines and activities by the following day.

We have quite a few options on what we can do when scaling and root planing becomes necessary. The longer you wait to come in and see us, the more sure it becomes that you will need this procedure.

Call our office today, and let us schedule a consultation with you so we can discuss the current health of your mouth and how we can improve the overall health of your mouth.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (410) 260-0790 today.
