How Do I Take Care of My Dental Implants?

You can keep your smile healthy and maintain your dental implants for a long time by practicing good dental hygiene habits every day:

At-Home Oral Hygiene

Taking care of dental implants is a lot like taking care of your natural teeth. You need to brush them for at least two minutes twice a day with a manual or electric toothbrush.

Also, do not forget to floss! Flossing helps remove plaque buildup to keep the surrounding gum and bone tissue healthy. When flossing your dental implant, be sure to floss underneath the implant crown. You can also use tools like soft rubber gum simulators or water flossers to help clean the gum tissue surrounding your implant.

Every at-home oral care plan will be different depending on your individual needs, so it is important to speak with us or your dental care provider at your appointments about what cleaning methods are best for you.

Regular Teeth Cleanings

Each person will have individual recommendations for how often they should get their teeth cleaned. However, it is recommended that you get your teeth cleaned regularly each year. For some, that might be every six months, and for others, it might as often as every three to four months.

These regular cleanings (along with good oral hygiene at home) are important for keeping your mouth healthy and your dental implant attached. Consistent check-ups with your dental care provider can help make sure you avoid infection, which can put at risk for dental implant failure. When there is infection, there is a possibility of your dental implant losing its stability as the gum starts to pull away and the bone deteriorates.
